After a few listens I feel as if I’m ready to review Hester Prynne‘s debut album The Goswell Divorce. As a note, for some reason I thought this was As Blood Runs Black’s new album. I had mixed up the name of one of ABRB’s song with their name and I actually got through one entire listen before I realized my mistake. Shows you how generic deathcore is.

The album art for The Goswell Divorce is mediocre at best. The first time you see it, you think “Hey, that’s alright” but after a few glances the novelty really does wear off quite quickly. Weak attempt if you ask me, could have done a lot better.

Hester Prynne is, to say the least, a generic deathcore band. But they do have some fun little gimmicks to keep you entertained for a few listens. A few great solo’s, a few brutal breakdowns…pretty much everything yore looking for in a deathcore album. One thing this band fails epically hard on is their use of Bass Drops (808′s..whatever you wanna call them). I am a huge fan of these, they are wicked cool in a car with good bass, but Hester Prynne just didn’t understand how to effectively use them. They come in at the most random times, and never last long enough. First time a band has failed with these…I mean, even Atilla did it right.

Guitars/Bass/Drums are all what you would expect, nothing ground breaking but if you’re a fan of the genre you will enjoy the licks. The high vocals are great, but the lows could use a little work. Not the best I’ve ever heard. The vocals sound similar to Bring Me The Horizon‘s debut album, not Oli’s talk/scream he has going now.

“Leean Legore” is my favorite track on the album, combining great deathcore with a chill interlude and awesome finishing solo. One of the most solid songs on the album. Which is, oddly enough, followed by the albums worst song “Bad for Business” (Oh so true) which is a terrible Attack Attack techno interlude. A huge waste of disc space, not sure what compelled them to put this piece of shit on the album. Oh and by the way, the song ends with an explosion…you know… like the end of a Junior Varsity cheer leading routine…yea like that. The last song “The Courtship of Wolves and Sharks” is also another great song that ends with a chill guitar session.

All in all, The Goswell Divorce is an alright album, if you’re into deathcore that is. Generic, but with a few fun surprises thrown into the mix give the album a slight edge. I highly suggest if you’re a fan of Bring Me The Horizon or A Thousand Times Repent.

I am a student attending The University of Florida. I spend a majority of my time listening and discovering new music. This prompted me to start the original Mind Equals Blown, in an attempt to share the amazing bands I continue to discover. I... Read More

  • I must say I appreciate your opinion but I have to disagree.
They have been my favorite band for three years and I now have the honor of being extremely good friends with Stephan.
They aren\’t rap, so why should their bass parts have to matter when listening to their music with subs?
And I defff agree that Oli has a talk/scream thing going now :(
    Shit\’s weak.
    Peace outtt.

  • “After a few listens I feel as if I’m ready to review” this was your first and worst mistake..If your gonna give your opinion on a band based on a few listens then you might as well not waste you time..becasue this obviously has skewed your view of the album as a whole..i have to admit i didnt like it at first but that doesn’t mean i wrote it off as a generic deathcore band..come cmon bro get real this is far from generic..and the fact that you got through a whole listen without knowing the difference between this and ABRB shows just how little you know about deathcore. and the whole thing about the 808′s, i totally agree with Miranda up there, i mean who gives a shit if their “randomly placed” which IMO they arent..if you want something that sounds good on your bumpin system then go get the new lil wayne album and stop giving half ass reviews of bad ass bands. for future reference, at least give the album some time before you post a shitty review bashing the band..it just makes you look like your a “generic” and unprofessional reviewer.

  • Lance….You are an idiot. Ironically I know that Lance is the singers name and I feel like you are just bashing a review of shit CD. I gave this album a long, hard listen. After reading your comment, I listened again. This shit album has nothing to offer besides a few shitty gimmicks. I would say that eight out of the eleven songs have almost identical patterns, with the same speed, same drum fills, same transitions. K, so they put in some techno (which is bad by the way) in a few songs. That’s not innovative at ALL. Bad for Business (My Horoscope just reads doom as well)is indeed a waste of space, filler thrown in to buff up the already low cd run time. The vocals are TERRIBLE. Shitty inhale screams and bree bree buttsex. The lyrics have some catchiness to them, but vocals follow a very distinct pattern for delivery in almost EVERY SINGLE SONG. That guy has to learn some new tricks.

All in all, Hester Prynne is summed up into one question “what the fuck was that?”

  • Couldn’t disagree any more. This band is freaking bad ass. I did just write a long ass comment flaming your review but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. I’d recommend this to any fan of death metal who dislikes deathcore because this is deathcore done extremely well.

  • What kind of fucking screaming is that? Inhales? Blow me! This is WORSE than Bring Me The Horizon, it all sounds the same, same riff structure. Same 2 drum beats, nahhh nigguh nope, not working. Wanna get a good band? Try For Today or As Blood Runs Black.
