In keeping with the Hardcore climate in a sense, Walter Schreifels makes his introduction into our little corner of the internet here at Mind Equals Blown. Schreifels, as some of you may know was a very influential artist in the Hardcore scene throughout the 90′s. Quicksand in particular set the table for much of the Hardcore music we listen to today, and if you are not familiar with this legendary band, then I suggest you fix that.

Schreifels now has strayed from the genre of Hardcore and has recently released is his solo debut entitled An Open Letter To The Scene, a Folk-Rock record, which if it could be described in one word : Innocent. The album is solid and has something for nearly any tolerant music fan.

Walter has not shied from his hardcore roots, in fact he embraces them in the album, with a rendition of Agnostic’s “Society’s Sucker” and a version of a song written for a Hardcore project, Civ, in “Don’t Gotta Prove It”. A unique quality about the songs on Schreifels’s debut is that they could easily sound great as much heavier songs, but their softness is definitely a breath of fresh air.

Schreifels has a light and inviting voice, that seems to have a quality about it that anyone can come to like. This album invokes only the most positive of feelings, and I think if we all listened to a few Walter Schreifels songs before we start our day, it might end a little happier.

Lyrically, Walter touches on some more serious subjects, like In “Open Letter” and even offers some comedic relief with “Ballad of Lil’Kim”. Schreifels’s song structure, with chordy guitar and sprinkled ambient effects, plays well with his soft voice. If you’re looking for a great album for your car, this is it kids.

While Schreifels is not novice to the music scene, he has burst back into the spotlight in a new and exciting fashion with AOLTTS, and I suspect there will be a lot more to come.
