After three years of hiatus, Hot Hot Heat is back with a brand new release in Future Breeds. Part of the reason we have not heard from them, is because they have spent the majority of their time building a studio, and learning everything that goes along with creating a record from scratch, all by themselves. They sought creative freedom, and they got it, it shines brightly throughout this new album. The words normal or ordinary are two words that no one in their right mind could use to describe this album. Without listening to the album, you get an impression from song titles alone, an example being “JFK’s LSD”.

Future Breeds bring with it a HHH reminiscent of their earlier records, with a n interesting twist. ‘Weird’ is definitely a feeling that courses throughout out the record, but it is dispersed so perfectly in the album that it seems to act as a hook, keeping you listening. I have often replayed songs after hearing something strange and saying to myself “What the hell…?” Regardless of whether or not it was by design, it keeps one listening and wondering.

The album is carried on the backs of Steve Bay’s stellar keys, his sporadic voice and supplemented with wild guitars. Future Breeds is a record that demands a thorough listening, not just a sampling. A quality that nearly every song shares is that many of the songs do not have the same direction from minute to minute. While you can mark the album as “indie” it is really hard to pinpoint a sound to relate it to, the band has released nothing more unique in its career.

This album is perfect to kick off some summer listening, you can impress all your hipster friends with something new and exciting, but act quickly, Hot Hot Heat are not going to stay the indie gem they have been for long.

I like music so much that I'm trying (and currently failing) to make my own. My life is incredibly ordinary but things like this so-called "music" and MEB change that a little and for that I am grateful beyond words. I maintain my facade' as a high-school grad with no plans for his future. In truth I roam the night thwarting the most dangerous of criminals in my relatively small Central California town: cow tippers.
