Thoughts on new Chiodos track: “Modern Wolf Hair”

Chiodos has largely been playing their cards close to the chest regarding their upcoming record, Illuminaudio.  Due October 5, fans are only now getting to hear a second mastered track from the record.  ”Modern Wolf Hair” show’s the promise we’ve prayed for from the Brandon Bolmer-era for many different reasons.

About a month ago we got our first taste of new recordings when “Those Who Slay Together, Stay Together” appeared on the band’s MySpace.  A nice chorus and customarily-good piano work from Bradley Bell made for a solid track, but the song felt a bit bland compared to the unique sound during the Craig Owens days.  Everything was too simple structurally and lacked the punch older songs gave.

This isn’t the case with “Modern Wolf Hair.”  Gang chants open over a quick drum roll to get the pace going.  A catchy Jason Hale riff accompanied by more of Bell’s tasteful synths keeps energy high while Bolmer shows his talents.  The new vocalist is surprisingly smooth, with flawlessly elegant cleans that transition nicely into a raspier tone when needed.

After seeing him twice live, I know first hand that Bolmer packs a powerful scream.  Sadly, the mixing here doesn’t do him justice.  Hopefully it’s simply a quality issue with whatever mp3 is on the website, because the man can be fairly brutal.

Here’s something I don’t say very often these days: solid breakdown.  Just heavy enough to usher in a violent pit, yet not so much so to alienate the rest of the song.  This song could potentially be a beast live, maybe near the level of “The Undertaker’s Thirst For Revenge Is Unquenchable.”

It should be noted that while I hardly consider Bolmer lyrically or melodically as strong as Owens, at several points in the track there is a striking resemblance.  The repeated line “I’ve wasted all this time trying to stand by your side” feels like something Craig would have delivered.

There has been a progression, folks.  ”Modern Wolf Hair” should meet the expectations Bone Palace Ballet fans have set for Chiodos.  Look for the record October 5th via Equal Vision.

I am a student attending The University of Florida. I spend a majority of my time listening and discovering new music. This prompted me to start the original Mind Equals Blown, in an attempt to share the amazing bands I continue to discover. I enjoy most genres of music, but lean on the heavier side of things the majority of the time. I enjoy bands that have mastered the guitar, and always love a good breakdown. When not doing music related things I enjoy losing to 12 year olds at Halo 3 and watching the Florida Gators win. I am also an expert (plastic) guitar player.
