Typically, D.I.Y. stands for either lo-fi or low quality. Typically, pop-rock music doesn’t carry much longevity. But The Miracle is Now is anything but typical. These Melbourne, Australia natives have one of the best collective work ethics in indie music. The Miracle is Now has released two EPs of super-catchy pop-rock in two years, with no signs of slowing down. One only needs to download their We Are Insane EP to grasp the degree of professionalism that they work with. An EP, I might add, that is free. You can download We Are Insane for exactly zero dollars by visiting their website (www.themiracleisnow.com) and joining their email list.

In simplest terms, TMIN writes feel-good music. We Are Insane is your ticket to fun, infectious music that you won’t have to hide from your hipster buddies. If they don’t sing along to the “Woah-oh/I’m on the road, I’m on my own” bridge in “There’s Just No You In Me,” then make new friends. “The Power of Matthew Parker” will be stuck in your head upon first listen, but unlike most pop-rock songs, is good for more than just a few listens. The band also had the sense to branch out sonically, using instruments as diverse as a toy xylophone on “Do You Believe In What You Talk About So Much?” The most impressive aspect of We Are Insane is how polished it sounds. After hearing their material, I did a double take when I read that The Miracle is Now was unsigned. The EP is exceptionally well produced – refined, while keeping it edgy where it needs to be. As it were, TMIN may not even need a label to continue to become more successful.

You won’t find any math rock in We Are Insane – the instrumentals here aren’t technically spectacular, which might be disappointing if the songs called for them to be. TMIN’s real weakness lies with their lyrics, which aren’t bad, but tend to be generic. However, they excel melodically, which makes the iffy lyricism more than forgivable. Josh Burgan’s poignant vocal delivery makes the lyrics sound far more meaningful than they might look (listen to “The Power of Matthew Parker”).

The Miracle Is Now fulfills its purpose – light-hearted, fun pop-rock – while maintaining a sense of integrity in their songwriting. A guilty pleasure band – minus the guilt. Their debut EP, We Are Insane, is great, catchy summer music. And it’s free, so there is no reason for anybody not to own it.
