If you were disappointed that the new Opeth album doesn’t have any death growls, then maybe this will help you out. 7 Horns 7 Eyes have just released their Convalescence EP through Century Media Records/Basick Records, and my god is it good.

First off, I would consider this an EP, since it contains two extremely good songs that all deserve attention, and not just a single which is how it’s marketed. “Convalescence” isn’t even a song at all, but an interlude. The first song, “Vindicator,” is an exceptionally brutal song that has quickly placed on my list as one of the top ten songs of the year. It’s a slow and heavy track that draws influence from Opeth. They share a similar musical style, most notably on how they arrange the instruments and the actual execution of the song, but without the strings and other outside melodic instruments. As for the vocals, I’m literally staring at the computer screen at a loss for words to describe them. Mind equals blown.

To follow up such a stellar track as that is hard. Luckily, this band does it right. “The Winnowing” has bestowed justice onto the death/progressive world. With slow, epic buildups and devilish vocals, how can anyone not like this? Haunting guitars, unrelenting bass, and spot-on drumming will keep this track forever in my head. It also has some mathcore elements thrown into it, meaning that everything has to be just right and all the notes in the right place for it to sound as good as it does. The guitar solo leaves you breathless, begging for more songs. The only problem I have is how short the song is.

This is NOT the same 7 Horns 7 Eyes you once knew. This EP makes up for the horrible self-titled release in 2007. If you don’t have this, buy it. Right now.
