Whether you’re on board with “The Wave” and its participating bands or not there is one thing that is undeniable: it has breathed new life into hardcore. For several years many people would associate the genre with metalcore bands such as The Devil Wears Prada and Attack Attack!. However recently we’ve seen acts like Touché Amore and Defeater who stick closer to actual hardcore come in and give their own much-needed spin on the genre. With popularity rising for these groups it became possible to be in a band of the sort and actually be relatively successful and garner a nationwide fan base. One of the bands that might be able to break out into the national circuit in the coming years is Massachusetts’ own My Fictions.

Like many bands in the genre, My Fictions treads a very melodic and emo-infused breed of hardcore. The drums are fast and pounding and the vocals are commanding. Yet there are moments of calmness and serenity. The opening track of the band’s EP I Want Nothing showcases what the band is attempting to portray musically. It’s intense but also makes sure to get across that this is a band of musicians.

One of the most appealing aspects of this band is the triple vocal attack of bass player Bryan Carifio, guitarist Tyler Bradley and guitarist Ryan Boone. The variety of voices prevents them from becoming stale quickly. It should also be noted that drummer Seamus Menihane gives a hell of a performance. He clearly knows when he is required to play quickly (“I Am an Ornament”) and when he should elaborate for the sake of melody (“Torch”).

The guitars play an important role here, and they’re not just here to make a ruckus; the EP gets its dark vibe from the feelings they give. Take for example the uncomfortable claustrophobic feeling at the beginning of “I Am an Ornament,” or the atmospheric break in “Same Grave.”

With I Want Nothing, My Fiction has begun an upward climb. The music on the EP showcases a band with technical and songwriting talent. With a little more tweaking on the production side of things they could easily release a behemoth of a record. Not to mention that with the current state of hardcore music, it’s safe to say luck is also on their side.

I’m an 18 year old Senior at Coral Gables High School in Miami, Florida. My five main loves in life are music, history, Pokemon, literature, and cats. I’m somewhat of a music nerd, so I tend to listen to any genre of music, but I am very particular as to which bands/artist I listen to from said genre. I’m also terrible at video games and sports, which I think makes me lame by default. Also, if it’s worth mentioning, I am fluent in Spanish, so don’t hesitate to let me do your Spanish homework.
