With Converse’s Three Artists, One Song series, we usually hear a misfit cast of particulars collaborating on genre-busting tunes. Rather than their usual obscure pairings, Converse matched three highly-respected mad scientists: Andre 3000 of Outkast, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and Damon Albarn, the mastermind of Gorillaz. The surprisingly genius gathering produced an unsurprisingly great song in “DoYaThing,” a bouncy electronic track that should appease fans of each musician.
A few bleeps lead into a groovy loop and a strong verse from Albarn 2D, followed by a big Murphy falsetto chorus that just works. Everything through the second chorus is a clear sum of all parts; its exactly what you would expect from the insanity these musicians have released in the past. Batting clean-up is Benjamin Andre, initially offering his unique singing before dropping into a lightning-quick verse of Ice Cold’s customary rap stylings. Good luck getting “Do ya damn thing, do ya thang, ya thang” out of your head. The multi-talented Andre actually owns the entire second half of the track, singing his way to the abrupt end.
“DoYaThing” is an oreo – a tasty treat that’s exactly what you wanted; the problem is, no one eats just one oreo, and the track has me clamoring for more from the trio. Even the musicians seemed to agree: in an interview, Murphy said, “If we’d have had two weeks, we could have made a whole record, I’m sure of it.” Fortunately, there is another offering coming in a few weeks when Gorillaz release an improvised, 12-minute version of the same track, with a supposedly unreal amount of impromptu Andre proclaiming “I’m the shit!” One can only imagine the hilarity that ensues in the 3x longer version.
It’s fun, it’s nuts, and I want more. Grab “DoYaThing” for free on Converse’s official site.
