When I was asked to cover this week’s 3 Of The Week, I knew nearly instantly which three songs I would chose to share. 2008 was a year where, musically, I was the most excited in my entire life. Three of my favorite artists released what was, and still is, some of my favorite work to date. These songs and the albums that contain them has given me boundless inspiration in nearly everything that I do.
1. “Silver Wings” – Thrice
With the release of Alchemy Index Vol. I & II, Thrice showed their fans that they were in for a change. The band took a break from their normal recording process and took things into their own hands, experimenting with different sounds, a lot of digital effects, and self-producing the albums themselves. Thrice created a revolutionary new sound with Water, in relation to their previous releases. They released these two mini-albums under the premise of the elements, I & II being Fire and Water. 2008 brought with it Vol. III and IV, Earth and Air. Again Thrice pushed the envelope with their broad branching out, which brings me to “Silver Wings”. The song is heavy digitalized, with a techno-esque drum beat and ambient instrumentation. The song itself does not rank higher than any other on any of the four albums, in fact I would not put it even in the top 5, but the lyrics are something different. I was able to relate to the lyrics on such a profound level, I would not stop listening to this song for days. Lyrically speaking, Thrice has matured throughout the years like a fine wine, and “Silver Wings” is a particularly elegant vintage.
2. “Waiting…” – City And Colour
City And Colour’s second album was something truly special to me, Dallas Green is among those I admire most in this world, and musically he is my idol. Bring Me Your Love was released on my birthday, and the album was on a near constant loop, whether it be through my iPod, or in my head. The song “Waiting…” in particular is a song that will forever be in the top 5 of my favorite songs of all time. The song is so well crafted, and as a fledgling musician I wanted nothing more to be able to create something even close to the level of that song. “Waiting…” has held a place of reverence in me as an artist, and if I can ever accomplish anything along the lines of it, I will be truly satisfied in life. The sheer musicianship behind “Waiting…” is something that every artist and fan alike should look upon fondly.
3. “Vampires” – Strung Out
Strung Out is a legendary punk band from California, and since I was young I have been listening, mostly as a result of teen angst and rebellion, rather than a true appreciation for music. Needless to say, when I developed an acute appreciation for music, my appreciation for this particular song grew. The song, in all honesty is nothing special in terms of guitar riffs or arrangement, but the of the rough guitars and Jason Cruz’s voice is enough to send chills down your spine. I have yet to listen to the chorus without feeling the hair on my arms stand on end.
