If the name Mulu Lizi conjures up images of exotic locales south of the equator, you are headed in the wrong direction. Mulu Lizi is a star in the Libra constellation, as well as a stellar alternative rock band from Rochester, New York. Brothers Art Zimmer (guitar/vocals) and Chris Zimmer (bass/vocals) joined Steve Mackin (lead guitar) and Kyle Craw (drums) to create a distinctly new sound with a traditional punk rock feel on their debut EP Men Of Fire.
Music is a journey. There is no single moment in music that signifies the beginning or end. It is a journey that continues as it grows. For Mulu Lizi, it is not the end result, but the path they traveled to get there that counts. The process of recording their songs was a chance to learn and experiment with music. Zimmer explains, “We want to get more into the technology aspect, doing backtracking, getting into sample pads.” By using new techniques, Mulu Lizi is discovering a more mainstream sound. They are also finding that listeners connect to their music in different ways. One person may like a song because it reminds them of their past, while another is drawn to the same song for a completely opposite reason. Their music has the power to unite a diverse group of people in the meaning they take from it, and that is what drives Mulu Lizi forward.
More than a name. Often it is more difficult to choose a name for the band than to write, record, and produce a full-length album. It took months for Mulu Lizi to commit. Zimmer says, “We were trying to come up with something original.” After two months of picking names out of a hat, they came across Mulu Lizi. After a thorough internet search, they found no other entity was using that name. But what does it really mean? Zimmer disclosed, “The name of the star actually means ‘men of fire’, which is the title of our first EP. We thought it fit us perfectly.” And it does! The passion for creating music burns bright in Mulu Lizi and is apparent in the high energy songs, tailor-made for any alternative rock fan.
Achievement is measured in recognition. The success of an artist is not always measured by the venues they play or the amount of money they make. At a recent family reunion in Cleveland, Mulu Lizi was humbled at the extent of their popularity. Introductions were unnecessary, as most of the people already knew who they were. Time after time, friends and relatives congratulated them, mentioning a music video or song from their discography. Mackin remarked, “It was definitely uplifting. Just arriving there (in Cleveland) after the drive, getting that boost of confidence. Like, we are here for a good reason.” It was an opportunity to see firsthand how people relate to their music and how what they do is important to the fans who listen.
Coming soon! Mulu Lizi will be returning to the tour circuit later this year and are currently working on their first full-length album. They are exploring new avenues for music in movies, video games, and more. With their signature sound of infectious choruses and solid musicianship, they are truly the men of fire in the alternative rock scene.
