So let me briefly set the stage – there’s faint lighting within Arlene’s Grocery and a single keyboard on the stage. Right on the stage, Texas artist Malia Grace is getting lost within her cover of Emeli Sande‘s “Next To Me”. Eyes closed, singing beautifully with a few in the crowd, hands outstretched and joining in as well. The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon just recently shared her single, “Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool,” which is a catchy pop/soul fusion that shows off Grace’s strong and playful vocal style really well. Here’s what the singer had to say about the single:
“After a long, emotional day, I wrote Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool in the parking lot of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, where I was employed as a professional vocalist for two years. As many can relate to, I had been frequently taken advantage of by love interests, strangers, and good friends. The lyrics and melody flooded out more naturally than ever before, and that’s when I knew what it was. Mama was my anthem. It was and still is a reminder that we are more than people give us credit for.“
Grace has been writing her own music since the age of 13 and listening to her Soundcloud going through her early demos, you can hear the evolution with her style and voice to what I’m sure is going to be a very successful career. At shows, we are pretty much bombarded by distractions. On this night, all eyes were focused on a soulful women with her piano just trying to get her songs on into the world. Her debut self-titled EP is due to be released on October 29th.
