Time was not always a blessing to Nick Greer, who spent his childhood battling asthma. However, the funk/soul/hip hop/R&B musician made the most of it by becoming a rising star in the Texas music scene. Hours of writing stories and poetry developed into musical storytelling when he got a keyboard for Christmas. He instantly loved the way an idea transformed into a complete tale as the music and words came to life under his fingers on the piano keys.
Storytelling is an art. Greer uses his love of horror films and unique storytelling ability in the song “Forevermore” to give both perspectives of death. It is an age-old story with a new twist. Two lovers promise to stay together forever. One dies, before his time, but true to his promise he remains, “I’m dead and gone away/My soul is here to stay/heart on fire/Gonna guide you through the darkness/Through the hardest” because he vowed to be with her for eternity. He believes that his tragic demise does not have to be the end of their relationship. On the other hand, she is frightened at being haunted by something (or someone) she does not recognize or understand.
Collaboration is a must. Greer would like to learn how to read and write music. As it stands right now, he must memorize or record each piece to make a cohesive song. He plays with an ever-changing group of musicians, trying to choose artists who show talent above his own. He searches for musicians that he can learn from, and says, “What I love about music is the experience and getting to work with people that I am blown away by. Figuring out a way to take my ideas, (combine) it with them and expand. Basically, people who are better than me”. The music of Nick Greer and the G’s is often written for specific voices or instruments, but can be adapted to fit the line-up changes.
It’s perfect! There is only so much I can tell you about the powerful music of Nick Greer. The beauty is in the listening and the myriad of emotions each song can evoke. Greer translates his vast ability to feel each note into music that listeners cannot get enough of. For him, the emotion behind the music is what makes a song just right. Technical aspects fade to the background for Greer, if a tune can spark his imagination and make him feel a given emotion. His sophomore full length album, Hearts on Fire, is a collection of musical stories that play through your mind like a favorite movie. Nick Greer and the G’s will continue to play their weekly gig in Houston, while working on the next collection of songs from the heart that are guaranteed to touch your heart.
