As is presumably quite evident by this point, the Mind Equals Blown staffers have incredible taste. So, it’s probably not surprising that much of the staff is made up of Breaking Bad fans. In honor of this Sunday’s series finale, I present to you a #BrBa-themed 3 Of The Week, featuring some of the most memorable songs from the series.
1. “Major Tom (Peter Schilling cover)” – Gale Boetticher
If you’re anything like me, you had a soft spot in your heart for ol’ Gale. Poor guy, he was just trying to live his little nerdy vegan life, brew some coffee, and read some Walt Whitman. Though we did have to witness his untimely passing, Season 4 fortunately blessed us with this musical gem when the investigation team passed it on to Hank as evidence. Here’s to Gale’s other favorite W.W..
2. “Crystal Blue Persuasion” – Tommy James & The Shondells
I would dare to argue that the “Crystal Blue Persuasion” montage in Season 5 is one of the best uses of a song in television history. I think everyone immediately stared at the TV open-mouthed upon hearing this oldies band croon the words “crystal blue persuasion” over scenes of Walt’s cooking operation growing to international heights. Was this song made for Breaking Bad? Did Vince Gilligan travel back to 1969 and hire Tommy James to create something so perfect? We may never know.
3. “Baby Blue” – Badfinger
“Guess I got what I deserved” is the first line of the last song of the entire series, playing over the final moments in an all-too-appropriate way. For those extraordinarily slack fans who still have yet to watch the finale, I won’t give anything away; with that being said, this song beautifully encapsulates everything that the finale sought to accomplish. “Just one more thing before I go / Take good care.”
