It is without a doubt that pop-punk has been getting bigger and bigger as of late. With New Found Glory’s recent “Pop-Punk’s Not Dead Tour” as well as Man Overboard’s viral “Defend Pop-Punk” slogan, fans of the genre are becoming more and more of a close-knit community.
My own pop-punk preference lies in the highest energy songs, those that make me want to jump up and sing along. These songs make me drop everything when they come on so I can scream the lyrics with the band, bringing a certain pop-punk trout to mind.
These three bands are among my favorites of the up-and-coming acts in pop-punk:
1. “Spark Fires” – The Story So Far
California’s The Story So Far is on track to become one of the biggest acts in pop-punk, with their debut full length Under Soil and Dirt having been released this past summer. This track is from TSSF’s earlier EP, While You Were Sleeping. When the chorus to “Spark Fires” comes on, I can’t help but yell the words while violently finger pointing. If I were a guy (or just less of a weakling), this is the song I would mosh to at shows.
2. “Through Being Crucial” – Crucial Dudeshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nsrSGNiohg
Crucial Dudes hail from New Jersey and the band is among one of the harder acts in pop-punk. These promising newcomers dropped their debut album 61 Penn earlier this year and each track is catchier than the next. One of my favorites from the album is “Through Being Crucial” and it gets me pumped up every time I listen to it. With awesome tracks like this, the “Crudes” are sure to make an even bigger mark on the scene than they already have.
3. “No Blood, No Foul” – With the Puncheshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXXAynskLXU
“No Blood, No Foul” is off With the Punches’ second and latest EP, It’s Not the End of the World. With only about two years under their belts, the band members are already expertly crafting melodies backed by clever lyricism. Whenever this song comes on, you can be sure to hear me singing along with the chorus: “Can’t put myself down ‘til I’m overwhelmed and swallowed by the sea / I’ll fight the undertow that’s trying to drag this life from me”. With the Punches certainly have me looking forward to the full-length that they’ll be releasing on Doghouse Records.
