Sometimes our feature bringing three songs together under a single idea can be quite serious. It can be kind of outlandish as well though – much like this edition of the 3 Of The Week. All I ask you to think about today is references to a particular animal we use as a mascot here at Mind Equals Blown. One song will have a gorilla reference, the other two have ape references. In any case, enjoy this very varied selection of songs that pay some form of homage to our own MEB logo.
1. “N*ggas In Paris” – Jay-Z and Kanye West
The crazy thing about this song is the fact that someone actually filmed them playing it nine times in a row in Paris. In any case, it’s easy to know why they didn’t make this the single – but it’s sometimes tough to find people who know of any other songs on the record. Needless to say, this is a track that has a fire beat and some ridiculously good lines to go along with it. Go gorillas!
2. “Deathface” – Some Girls
And now we take a total left curve. Here we have a song that is nine minutes in length that drones through slamming drums and crunching guitars with little regard for your eardrums. At first listen, it seriously seems like a chore to get through. But don’t tell me that the play on repetition won’t have you randomly saying ‘APE!’ for some time afterwards.
3. “Statutory Ape” – The Black Dahlia Murder
It’s a story about an ape, per se. It’s totally brutal – musically and lyrically. The Detroit death metal outfit has a way with shaping their technically savage jams with interesting (to say the least) lyrics to boot. This song is no different – just tune in and bang your head.
