The “F” word. The most versatile word in the English language. It can be used as a verb, an adjective, a noun or any other lame word form that you learned in eighth grade English class. Most people frown upon such a vulgar word, others welcome its tenacity with the utmost love and care. Some throw it around like they are paid to, while others (like myself) use it only when it is truly necessary. Whether it be for the sake of humor, the result of an angry storm of cussing or just because you feel like it, the “F” word is one word that will always be loved and hated but above all, used. For this week’s 3 Of The Week I have decided to compile some songs by bands that know this word and use it to its highest ability.
1. “You’re Not Salinger. Get Over It.” – The Wonder Years
The Wonder Years have always been known for throwing around a lot of cuss words without a care, but in “You’re Not Salinger. Get Over It,” the “F” word is the most prominent cuss word you will hear. A song about patiently waiting to get out of the town you haven’t quite fit in to, “Salinger” instantaneously became the crowd favorite at all The Wonder Years’s shows. This may or may not be the direct result of the vast amount of “F” words thrown around here and there throughout the entire song. As Dan “Soupy” Campbell ends each chorus with a big “We’re fucking gone!,” one can’t help but shout those exact words as loud as possible, no matter where they are at or who they are with. (“Fuck” Count: 9)
2. “Shut Up” – Blink-182
Now here is a song that is a personal summer favorite of mine from a band known for creating relentlessly catchy summer jams. “Shut Up” is one song that resonates with everybody because of the fact that it is a very angry song. All those times you feel like screaming obscenities at people because they just won’t stop being so annoying are personified in this song. Throwing around the “F” word left and right, Mark Hoppus’s chorus of “I’ll never ask permission from you/Fuck off I’m not listening to you/I’m not coming home” bubbles up over the fuck-filled verses and makes for another song to scream at the top of your lungs when you’re pissed off at anyone, no matter what the reasoning is behind it. (“Fuck” Count: 9)
3. “L.A.X.” – Big D And The Kids Table
Oh boy. The title of the granddaddy of all songs featuring the infamous “F” word has to go to “L.A.X.” by Big D And The Kids Table. I don’t know what was going on in Big D frontman Dave McWane’s mind when he wrote this song, but it is quite clear what his favorite word was at the time of writing it. Ska is this band’s game and they have cemented their names as one of the best in the genre. Quite honestly there isn’t much I can say to describe the overall angst that this song delivers and I feel it would be much simpler for you, the nice reader of this article, to simply listen to the song, wait for the first true verse and let those words speak for themselves. Trust me, it’s a doozy. (“Fuck” Count: 26)
