In the wake of RYAT’s record release party at Password and a recent LA Weekly feature, it is high time we exhibit some talent from Unspeakable Records. Dot (aka Kate Ellwanger) founded her LA label as a means for female artists to collaborate on and promote their work without some of the constraints typical in the music industry.
1. “Hold You (Dot Remix)” – Fei-Fei
The Pretty Girls Don’t Hallucinate Remix EP dropped last week, and Unspeakable’s founder re-works Fei-Fei’s upbeat dance anthem to a hip hop track you can’t help but roll a blunt to. Bass lovers will rejoice when they hear the bounce on this one.
2. “Another Way” – RYAT
Comparisons to Björk abound whenever RYAT’s vocals come up, so let’s just get that out of the way (seriously though, what a compliment, Björk forever). And her vocals are gorgeous and powerful. Although I have not experienced the full audio-visual power of RYAT’s “Alt-Mode” performance, this track stands alone as haunting, yet singable.
3. “Pearls” – Space Cubs
Psychedelic ambient: Is that even a genre? Whatever you want to call it, this 2-minute nugget of a track is rich and expressive. Fans of Nicolas Jaar’s more downtempo stuff or even Valentin Stip will find much to like in this Buffalo-based artist’s repertoire. East Coasters, please do yourself a favor and catch Space Cubs live, as I’m San Francisco-bound and seem to be out of reach for now.
