Golden Hour is a perfect record from start to finish. It has some of the catchiest hooks you will ever hear, its instrumentation is varied and interesting throughout, thriving equally in a fully fleshed out sound as in a bare bones composition. Golden Hour is impeccably produced, giving off a vaguely psychedelic shine while always letting Musgraves immaculate voice take the spotlight. Golden Hour is a perfect showcase of incredible pop sensibilities in a unique package.
Both of Foxing’s first two LPs are fantastic in their own right, but Nearer My God sees the band shedding their skin in favor of a strange experiment of sounds that produce electrifying results. From the electronic pulses throughout to unexpected explosions of guitar to frontman Conor Murphy’s transfixing falsetto, Foxing’s third record is a revelation and a slap in the face to anyone claiming that there is no more interesting rock music.
The first record under American Pleasure Club’s new moniker, AWFLOT comes across as a collage of sounds, folding in near field recording-esque ambience with fuzzed out lo-fi rock with abstract electronics. It’s a hauntingly delicate album that carries so much weight.
It’s technically only an EP but that doesn’t mean that boygenius’s debut release isn’t better than 99% of all the full-lengths released this year. The formula is simple, if you combine three of the most gifted, emotionally powerful songwriters alive right now, you’ll end up with something truly special. Each member brings something wonderful to the group but hearing their powers meld together is truly awe-inspiring.
Joyce Manor’s journey from their debut to now is a remarkably intriguing one, and while their self-titled LP remains a genuine classic in my eyes, their most recent effort is the band’s new sound at its peak.
