Chris Fronzak is on top of the “partycore” movement that his band Attila helped start. As one of my personal idols of the music industry (especially after seeing them live with Arsonists Get All The Girls), I decided to have this interview with him to see what makes Attila click. Well, other than ganja that is.
MEB: What bands were you guys in before Attila? How did you all get together and decide on this particular style of music as compared to other genres?
Chris: No other bands. We just all met at parties and we like heavy-ass music.
Do you feel that you helped create a new edge in music with the so-called “partycore” movement and the bands that are rising out of it?
Sure. We did something different and unique which is always dope.
What made you decide on a cleaner singing style overall on Rage and Outlawed as compared to the unclean vox on Soundtrack To A Party and Fallacy?
I’m just getting better and maturing, that’s all. It’s still heavy, I’m just more dynamic than before.
What is the meaning behind the album title Outlawed? What about the cover?
It’s just a reference to how the industry has felt about us in the past. We’ve kinda been “Outlawed” from the scene for a while. The cover is just chicks making out which is dope. No meaning, just fun to look at.
What are your thoughts on being pretty much the heaviest band on the scream/post-hardcore dominated “Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour?” After the tour, what plans do you guys have next? Being that it’s sponsored by Motel 6, I’m sure that you won’t have any problem finding a place to sleep haha. I remember back when you toured with Arsonists Get All The Girls a number of years ago we partied at my house in Stockton.
It’s sick. This isn’t the first tour where we’ve been the heaviest. All of the other bands are close friends of ours. We’re on a really big tour right after RYTS.
How was the overall response from people during the All Stars Tour for you guys? What songs had people going batshit out in the pits? Do you play any covers?
The response was insane! People go ape-shit for “Payback” and “Rage.” No covers, but maybe in the future we will consider it.
What are your strains of choice? What are your thoughts on the California strains of weed as compared to the South’s strains? Have any of you tried “Herojuana” yet?
We fucking love the weed in California. It’s way better than anything on the East coast, that’s pretty much a fact. I personally love both sativa and indica strains. I like to smoke sativa in the morning/afternoon to get me hyped up and happy and indica strains later in the day and at night to get me really stoney and prepared for a good night’s sleep. No I haven’t tried Herojuana yet! Will you ship me some in a bag of coffee?
What made you guys decide to sign with Artery Recordings compared to the other labels out there?
We already had a close relationship with Artery Management, so it was a guaranteed good choice. A lot of other labels are super sketchy or they just have too big of a roster and you end up on the shelf. We are one of only a few bands on Artery, so we get pampered ;)
Nate, Comrie and Chris L., what are your guitars and amps of choice? Any difference between the ones you play live and record with?
Nope, they use the same ones live as they recorded with! My whole backline is fully sponsored by Dean guitars! They rule!! For amps, 6505 all da way!!
What is Sean’s kit of choice? Has it differed over the albums?
His kits have differed over the years but he is currently sponsored by Ddrum as well as Darkhorse, and he has two all-white kits! Gangsta-fresh.
What song would you guys like to record a music video of next?
Well we’ve got a brand new music video for “Payback” coming out shortly, and other than that, we are considering shooting our next video for “Another Round” or possibly a heavier song like “Sex Drugs & Violence.”
What influences do each of you have that you don’t share and what common ground do you all have?
We all listen to different styles of music. We all smoke a shit-load of ganja.
Any advice you road warriors can give to other people who want to form their own bands?
Make sure all of your members are dedicated and stick with it! It took us a long-ass time to get where we are now, so don’t expect that shit to happen overnight! If you’re trying to go big, all of your members have to be good at what they do, and it helps if everybody gets along well! You gotta be willing to drop everything and leave friends and family behind.
Any last words for your fans and the few who haven’t heard Attila yet?
We’ve got the best fans anyone could ever ask for! Stay positive, party hard, and have fun. If you haven’t heard of us, then grab a blunt and a lighter, spark that shit up and buy Outlawed.
