MEB Editor Maria Gironas got a chance to ask the boys of Fourth & Coast a couple questions about the inspiration behind their music, California living, and their current tour.
So what was the inspiration behind the lyric video?
We really just wanted to lyric video to be simple and clean looking, and I think it came out perfectly to what we were looking for.
Being from California myself, how has San Diego specifically influenced you in your music?
That’s awesome! San Diego has been big for us. Given the unusually bright weather, it definitely translated into the vibe of our sound. Although I grew up going to heavier shows, which didn’t necessarily influence our sound but as a guitar player it definitely had its shaping.
What’s your favorite hangout spot in San Diego?
Other than the beach, Jalepenos Mexican Food is the absolute best. It’s almost impossible to eat there without seeing someone from high school.
How has the tour been going? Any funny stories?
The tour has been great! Honestly we hit it off with the entire tour and crew immediately so it’s been a blast. So many stories I can’t even think of a specific one! On one of our off days in Montreal, our tour manager Jacob decided to tell every girl that he thought was beautiful that he loved them, in French of course, which lead to some interesting reactions.
How does the music work between you two? Does one person write more than the other?
We honestly write music at the weirdest times. We’re really bad at setting up a specific time to write a song. We’ll be at a grocery store or something and come up with an idea. I would say it’s a pretty joint effort on the writing. Melodies and guitar work etc.
If you could play at any venue, which would it be?
Madison Square Garden 100%.
Are you guys working on any new music? Is there an album in the works?
We definitely are! We have about a half dozen songs so far that we really like and we’re constantly writing more and changing parts around. We’re hoping to have a release sometime in the fall.
How did your band name come about?
Honestly one of our friends parents suggested it. It’s just a street corner. We decided on it because all of our previous name ideas had meaning to them, where as Fourth & Coast was a blank slate and it’s meaning would be determined by our future actions.
What does music mean to you?
To me music is my life. Writing, playing and listening. People say music is a way to express yourself to others, and that is totally true, but more than that it allows me to express myself to myself. I talk to myself about music all the time, I just try to do it in my head most the time.
What are some of your musical influences?
Our musical influences are literally spread across the board. From pop to indie to rap and hip hop to hardcore music, if we hear something we like we don’t hesitate to mix it in with ideas we’ve already created ourselves.
