Colorado Springs electropop/rock trio Hydrogen Skyline are on a roll in 2016: blowing away their Kickstarter goal to successfully fund their latest LP Photovoltaic, receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike, releasing videos for two tracks off the album (watch one below), and a show with the one and only Switchfoot in December. Not bad, right?
This Friday, November 4th, the band are performing as part of a fundraiser show at The Zodiac for The Riff Rag, a CO-based print music publication aiming to stay in print. We took some time out to ask them about the upcoming show, how fans can help out, what The Riff Rag means to the Colorado music scene, and the band’s plans through the end of 2016.
MEB: Thanks for taking some time out to chat today! How’s everything going in Hydrogen Skyline’s world lately?
Hydrogen Skyline: It’s going fantastically! We have our latest record [Photovoltaic] getting a lot of attention, and we’re just elated with the positive response it is receiving!
You guys have a rather special live show coming up on November 4th in Colorado Springs – can you tell us a little more about what all it entails?
Absolutely! It’s a fundraising concert for the Riff Rag which is a Colorado scene publication focusing on aggregating news and information regarding local musicians. We’re performing to show our support and to get people hyped about the music scene here!
What does The Riff Rag mean to you guys as a band and to the Colorado music scene as a whole?
The Riff Rag is a fantastic foundation for our scene. It gives musicians a voice and exposure that they previously didn’t have. One of my favorite things about the publication is that it is a total labor of love. Anthony Welch – the founder and curator of it – puts his heart and soul into meeting with the bands he’s publishing, gathering the info for new music releases and shows, and getting it all printed each month. He even delivers the zines to all his distributors!
Overall, it’s just an amazing effort for the betterment of our music scene, which is why I try to write some columns for it, and why we’re helping out with performing.
For those who can’t make it to the show and out-of-state readers, how can they contribute to help out The Riff Rag?
Any donations or funding helps! And not just giving money necessarily, the Riff Rag has placements for ads, so if you have an online business or brand or even if you’re an artist with a new album release, place an ad! Feel free to contact Anthony or ask questions at: firstname.lastname@example.org
What other plans does the band have in the works for the rest of 2016?
Music videos! We already have two videos out, but we have three more in the works for songs off our new record (Photovoltaic) and we hope to have those complete by year’s end! So keep a look out! But meanwhile, check out the videos for “Inhale / Exhale” and “Battery Acid” on YouTube!
Any last words for all the Hydrogen Skyline fans and readers out there?
Thank you all so much for the support and taking the time to read up about what we have going on! You are greatly appreciated!
Many thanks to Hydrogen Skyline for taking time to chat with us! If you’re in the Denver/Colorado Springs area and want to attend the show this Friday at The Zodiac, full lineup and ticket info is available here. Tickets are $5 with all door proceeds going directly to The Riff Rag to help keep them in print.
In the meantime, check out Hydrogen Skyline’s creepily artistic video for “Inhale/Exhale” below. If you’re into it, stream Photovoltaic in full on Spotify.
