MEB Staffer Ridge Briel recently caught up with ex-The Human Abstract vocalist Travis Richter.
MEB: So why did you decide to leave The Human Abstract? What are your current plans musically as of now?
Travis: Timing played a big part. I guess after being in the band for a bit I figured out it wasn’t my final musical resting place, but rather a pit stop.
How did you end up joining The Human Abstract in the first place?
I tried out and got the job, so it was pretty standard. Of course I knew them so that probably helped. :D
Would you ever consider re-forming From First To Last in the future?
Hard to see ol’ Skrillex (ex-singer for From First To Last) coming down from his mansion in heaven to make tunes with us again.
What sort of changes did you have to make in switching from the post-hardcore From First To Last to progressive metalcore The Human Abstract?
I really had to beef up my music skills. The best I’ve ever been at guitar was when I was singing for The Human Abstract.
What are your current musical plans?
First on my list is a new Modified Noise EP, and after that I’ll be busy in the studio producing for a few record labels.
Being that you have producer experience, is that something you plan on working on more?
Yep, exactly. I’ve always had the producer role in my bands and I even went to college for recording and producing music.
What is the status on your grindcore project The Color Of Violence? Do you plan on bringing that up again anytime soon?
I would love to do some stuff with that but I think Derek isn’t into the idea of making anything new for Color Of Violence. Such a shame.
When it comes to writing music, especially since it’s very diverse just among those three bands alone, what sort of topics and/or influences do you draw from?
I like social and mental mediums lyrically. I think artists have a responsibility to speak their minds; whether people want to hear value or crap is another topic.
What are some strange or crazy experiences/gigs that stand out to you while playing in those three bands?
With From First To Last, I had some pretty awesome times. Toured with Deftones, Kiss, Rage Against the Machine and none of those tours were in America. Score!
Who are your biggest musical influences? What albums would you recommend to people to listen to?
I love Daniel Johns and Radiohead. Fiona Apple is probably my favorite musical artist of all time.
Do you have any other projects that you want your fans to know about?
I think a lot of people don’t realize I produced/co-wrote both I Set My Friends On Fire records, which are pretty popular and well-hated :))
Are there any bands/individuals that you would like to work with?
I would love to make tunes with 16bit. Probably my favorite dubstep artist right now.
Any last words for your fans and what to expect from your awesome range of musical endeavors?
I’m going to be singing a lot more over modified noise tunes, so keep watching our evolution! It’s going to get pawesome, like a puppy paw.
