Interview performed and transcribed by David Roa
Weekend Prince, one of Brooklyn, NY’s emerging new wave – trash pop – panther wave scene artists, just released his debut album, Life is Fucked/Life is Tight, and I had the opportunity to interview him.
I walk into his recording studio, and immediately I am struck by the amount of tropical themed decorations. Pictures of pineapples, hula dancers, and tiki torches adorn the walls, with Roxy Music’s Country Life vinyl in the center of it all. I’m greeted by a man in a white Oxford and fur coat who immediately starts talking to me about crystals as I extend my hand to greet him. This man is the Weekend Prince.
What do you prefer to be called?
Edward or the Champagne Panther, I don’t care. Are people under the assumption that I stroll around town in fur handing out Weekend Prince business cards? Half true. I’m that #1 boi.
When did you start playing music?
I think I liked James Taylor and Alan Jackson when I was 4-7 years old. I was singing those songs, and I grew to like the Hispanic singers and boy bands as I got older. I was singing all along. I just kinda play the instruments because I prefer songs with vocals and instruments as opposed to songs with only vocals.
What bands do you draw inspiration from?
That shit changes. With this EP, it was a lot of Future. I will argue that he invented a new mold for a break up record with DS2. I think I tried for that mold, but got distracted by empathy and new love I was finding and investing in. Now, the whole NOW series inspires me, as well as Sparks, Bruce, Rae Sremmurd. I’m just inspired by artists that live right. It’s a chill balance between good times and art focus, that I’m jealous of other artists abilities of maintaining sometimes.
What is Life is Fucked/Life is Tight about?
Dualities. Me and you in a ying-yang dragon formation. It’s sexual and normal. Maybe people gain more consistency in their lives as they grow older. Maybe I even want that, but I had a few years of extremely high highs and low lows. I think most of us can agree that society is fucked. I’m just saying it’s kinda tight too!
Titanic with Leo opening.
So do you really drink that much white wine?
Yeah, and rosé. And it sounds cool and rhymes with a lot of shit.
Will there be a follow up?
I took a while off for other projects, but I would still write like four Weekend Prince songs every Tuesday night. Answer is yeah, but I have so many ideas I’m not quite sure what it will become. There are like two genres competing and I’m trying to figure out if I can make them coexist. That battle will decide whether this next shit will be full-length or another EP. I am fond of the EP format though.
