MEB staff writer Heather Allen and editor Maria Gironas chatted it up with the members of Mayday Parade at the Pomona, CA Vans Warped Tour date.
MEB: How do feel about your current album Monsters In the Closet broke the top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart?
It’s amazing! We all feel very humbled and it’s such a cool thing especially since it’s our 4th album, so to see how each album outdoes the last one is an amazing thing. It’s kept us rolling along and we’re happy to keep on truckin’.
With everything you have achieved as a band, what do you feel is your next step?
I don’t know. It’s tough to say because we kind of just want to keep on going, you know? It feels like we’ve kind of gotten in this cycle where we write an album, record the album, put it out, tour for like a year and a half, kind of all over the world, and you just repeat the process all over again and just enjoy it while we’re going, you know? We’ll start working on the next album next and just keep at it.
You recently released a deluxe edition of Monsters In the Closet with 3 new tracks. Why did you not include these tracks on the first edition of album?
When we recorded the album for 15 songs knowing that 12 of them were going to be on the album and 3 of them would be B-sides or the deluxe edition, but we didn’t know which ones they were going to be. It was kind of interesting because we were recording the songs and we didn’t know if that song would actually make the album or if it would be on the B-side basically. It feels like most bands don’t put out a 15 song album unless it’s a deluxe edition, so I think that was how it worked out I guess.
You’re on the cover of the Alternative Press Warped Tour Edition. How excited are you about that?
It incredible! The whole thing, everything about this Warped Tour and this summer, the 20th Anniversary, the AP cover thing, being on the main stage for the 1st time, having so many of our friends out here is amazing. We’re excited about the whole thing.
Speaking of main stage, you’ve been on Warped Tour 5 times and this year you’re on the main stage, Electric Soul Stage. What are your feelings about that? How were your past experiences from being on other stages as well?
Yeah, we’ve kind of done a lot since 2006 when we actually followed Warped Tour and sold CDs outside. We started playing in 2007 and have kinda hopped around different stages, from smaller stages to bigger stages and whatnot. You can’t really ask for anything more than playing the main stage at Warped Tour. It’s amazing and we’re very excited about it. It’s fun and each time you do you it, you get a little more comfortable with it, it gets easier and less stressful. I love it!
You guys started off as fans and now you’ve been on Warped Tour a couple years already. How do you think it’s different from being a fan to being someone being on stage, especially the main stage?
I always think about what 15 year-old me would think about us being here playing on the main stage because I went to Warped Tour and yeah, it’s an incredible thing. Back in 2002 was the first time I went and I had never been to anything like it, I still haven’t seen anything like it, and I still haven’t seen anything unique as Warped Tour. It’s tough to say. We’re just very happy and grateful and we want to try to enjoy it while we’re around.
What is your favorite warped tour memory so far?
On this one it’s tough to say, but when we played in Vegas it was our bass player’s [Jeremy Lenzo] birthday and we went out, had a good time. It was definitely one of the highlights for sure.
Other than Warped Tour, do you guys have any current projects that you’re working on?
Not really. We’re kind of mostly focusing on the band and we’re writing individually. I have a lot of ideas and everyone else has a lot of ideas that we’re kind of working on for whenever we decide to start working on the next album. That’s mostly it.
I know your daughter and your wife are back home. Do you guys Skype every day or how is that going?
We video chat a decent amount, but luckily we’re both doing what we’re doing and that definitely helps. She’s busy and I’m busy so we don’t necessarily do it everyday, but enough to where it helps.
How is it being a vegetarian on Warped Tour? We kind of talked a little bit about that earlier, but can you explain how vegetarian friendly Warped Tour is?
It’s great because there are a lot of people on the tour that are either vegetarian or pescatarian or vegan or anywhere in between. There’s catering everyday where they provide food for all the bands and crew and everything and they make the veggie option and vegan options everyday and it’s great. I know that everyday I have good food that’s there and it’s a little easier than a lot of tours. I love it. Some people complain about the catering, but I think it’s great.
Going back to Warped Tour. Which up-and-coming band do you think that we should we keep our eyes out for?
This tour I would definitely say Real Friends has been killing it. They’re great dudes, a great band, they’re one of the younger-ish and newer bands.
You guys regularly contribute to the Punk Goes… series, you’ve actually put out 6 songs for the series. What do you think your next song is going to be?
I don’t know! That’s a good question! Gosh, I didn’t know that we’ve done 6 of them, that’s crazy! I don’t know! It’s tough to say, but I think it depends on their next compilation is going to be about. I’ve always wanted to do a Punk Goes Disney and I hope Fearless does that someday. There are so many great songs to choose from but we’ll see.
What would be your personal preference?
My personal preference would be a song from Pete’s Dragon that a lot of people don’t know. There’s a handful that it could be, but any song from Pete’s Dragon really.
We also have a question from one of our friends. How hard is it to sing “Everything’s An Illusion?” What do you feel on stage when you play it?
It’s not like hard necessarily. We have a lot of personal songs and we kind of just go with it.
Any last words for your fans?
Thanks for the support! It really means the world to us and we’re happy to be able to be doing this these past 9 years. Thanks for everything and having a good time.
