The release of “Don’t Start Now” signifies a new Dua Lipa era is on the way. Before the English singer dropped her new single, she dyed her hair blonde and completely restarted her Instagram. So, it’s clear that, like many pop megstars who rebranded before her, she’s looking to start fresh.
Lipa stated in her Beats 1 interview that this single is “the perfect song to describe everything that the record is.” That is, it’s the preview of her upcoming second studio album following a few one-off efforts. Her last single was released in April for the movie Alita Battle Angel, and before that, two tracks in 2018: one with Calvin Harris and the other with Silk City.
She paved her way into the pop scene with her dance-infused beats and empowering lyrics. These elements have landed Lipa as the 49th artist on Spotify with the most monthly streams — a fast-growing artist clearly headed for international notability. Her 2017 debut Dua Lipa transformed her into a cult pop favorite to an artist of cosmic stardom. The album also won her a Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the start of 2019. Along with the release of this new gem, she only continues to prove her strong footing in the saturated pop world.
“Don’t Start Now” is heavily disco-influenced and might be her most danceable song to date. Her progression from EDM tracks in 2018 to disco sounds odd but doesn’t come as a surprise. The light pop beats typically used in her early work seemed to allude to a future of a more mature sound which is, in this case, disco heavy.
The lyrics follow a similar theme of “New Rules:” power, resilience, and a positive twist on heartbreak. She released a video along with the single and tweeted her thanks to iHeartRadio for putting this song on air as soon as she dropped it.
There is no confirmed word on when Dua Lipa 2 (DL2) will be released, so for now we can all just bop to “Don’t Start Now.”
