The Scoop: New Jersey-based 12-year-old, Grace Nevin (Grace Happens), has been working with vocal coach/artist mentor Deborah “Zuke” Smith for several years. This Maple Road Elementary School 6th grader is not only a talented singer-songwriter, but also has a heart of gold. She has taken Zuke’s advice to use her talent to make the world a better place by combining her passion for singing with her love and respect for the West Milford Special Olympics Team. This weekend Grace will be putting on a special fundraiser event with all proceeds benefiting the team. She’ll be performing a 10-song set, including an original song, “I Found An Angel,” she wrote for her favorite Special Olympian and friend, Ben Weiss. Grace and Zuke teamed up with Mecurio-Nadel Music (Lee Nadel & Rich Mercurio – Lana Del Rey, Regina Spektor, Idina Menzel), Marc Ribler (Jethro Tull, Carole King), and Tabitha Fair to write and record the song.
The Spin: Grace’s inspirational work is catching all sorts of attention, last week the Mayor bestowed a Proclamation of the Township of West Milford to Grace for all her hard work, claiming July 12th “as a day of recognition of the selfless contributions made by Grace to the West Milford Special Olympics Team”. Tomorrow morning (Wednesday, July 9th) Grace will be live on Good Morning America talking about her benefit concert and performing her original song!
