Off the heels of their successful 2013 self-titled album and as one of it’s crowning achievements, saw “Ain’t It Fun” win a 2015 Grammy for Best Rock Song, Paramore has made their return. The band has released their first single off their upcoming album After Laughter due out on May 12th via Fueled By Ramen called “Hard Times.”
The self-titled album saw Paramore rise both in ways that fans were familiar with and incorporating melodies that were more mainstream that brought them into a broader space. After the very emotional output of 2009’s Brand New Eyes where you saw Paramore at the brink, self-titled was like listening to a new era from those ashes. In contrast to their first single from their self-titled, “Now,” which had aggressive guitars and sonically-filling chorus, “Hard Times” draws it’s inspiration from 80’s synth pop and late disco. This song also marks the return of founding drummer Zac Farro.
The video itself hearkens back to the days of trippy visuals that graced early 80’s TV screens at the birth of MTV. While the song musically is upbeat and catchy, lyrically, it deals with the bout of depression that lead singer Hayley Willams was battling as spoken about in the band’s interview with the New York Times.
“Walking around/With my little raincloud/Hanging over my head/And it ain’t coming down”
In watching the recent incarnations of Paramore, it seems like hardship only makes the band grow stronger and pushes them to find new ventures to express themselves from a musical standpoint. Watch the new video below. Pre-order the new album here as well as check out some cool bundles.
