At least you don’t have to endanger your life by listening to this Dethklok.
It seems insane that this cartoon death metal band from Metalocalypse is talked about with jokes aside. Except they play live with, you know, real people.
As creator Brendon Small’s (vocalist/guitarist; pictured above) vision for the most brutal metal band on the planet, Dethalbum III packs so much more than a late-night animated series.
This thing is beefy and probably NSFW (which is why it’s late-night?). It certainly isn’t Kidz Bop or an atrocious movie soundtrack. Tracks like “I Ejaculate Fire,” “Crush the Industry” and “Andromeda” are heavier than what most groups are releasing now. Riff upon riff and polyrhythm upon polyrhythm, this is just what Dethklok is and they prove that the third time’s the charm.
The difference between Dethalbum II and III is enormous. III sounds more mature and less like Small trying to impersonate Nathan Explosion – he just lets his natural vocals do the work. The difference doesn’t make it sound like a band that isn’t Dethklok but it’s a noticeable change that makes it feel more real than a comedic cartoon. Could you argue that the Explosion-style vocals are over the top? Only if you say Cannibal Corpse’s are too. We have to take it seriously. I mean, friggin’ Gene Hoglan did the drums for this record. Yeah, the guy from Death and more recently, Testament.
Though most of the tracks are featured in Season 4 of the show (ugh, what a cliffhanger it ended on), they cohesively work together instead of being separate storylines. Dethalbum III only loses points for no soul, but… it’s supposed to be soul-crushing. A slight sound blend happens near the end of the album but to end a record on a song like “Rejoin” is a statement for sure. A statement which says: we just don’t give a (pinch-harmonic) what you think.
What could make this better is if we each had a Charles Foster Ofdensen to keep us from making poor decisions too. A CFO, if you will. Wait – we our own CFO’s. So this may not be the band where you go out and display a t-shirt with a bloody Dethklok design on it, which in turn ends up scaring your parents and girlfriend, but the new installment sure is impressive.
