As if Sleeping With Sirens haven’t already established themselves as the best girlfriend music in the post-hardcore realm, vocalist Kellin Quinn takes it acoustically and showcases his countertenor abilities to the maximum with the If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack EP.
Starting off the EP is “Scene One – James Dean & Audrey Hepburn.” The opening track from their 2010 debut With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear is arguably their most popular song and is my personal favorite by the band, so seeing them remaking it in an acoustic fashion is awesome. The vocal style is radically different and breathes new life into the song that, in some ways, makes it superior to the original. There are also some slight atmosphere-building keyboards that really create the mood, hence the label as “girlfriend music.”
The only other vocalist who can really bring to mind in similar style is Tyler Carter (ex-Woe, Is Me), and “Scene Three – Stomach Tied In Knots” shows Quinn doing a very similar vocal approach to Carter. This brand new song immediately makes me think of how it would sound if it was made in a post-hardcore fashion, which I hope they do on their next album. A little sappy in the lyrics but otherwise a touching song.
The EP has three brand new songs that are bookended by two acoustic versions of previous songs. It shows the band can go back and revisit their immediate classics and rework them in a bare-bones version while also writing new material to reflect their songwriting ability. This is the stuff that will write them in music history and you can only sit back, turn up the volume, grab your mate, and listen as these once-newcomers quickly rise the ranks and become one of the most talented vocally-fronted bands of this current generation of music.
