Swedish EDM duo, Galantis, is comprised of DJs Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw. The two released their debut album, Pharmacy, in 2015 and became internationally recognized in the EDM world with singles like “Peanut Butter Jelly” and “Runaway (U & I)”. Their sophomore album, The Aviary, was released in mid September of this year and has received glowing responses from even more of the EDM community.
The guys stopped in Boston to the sold out House of Blues on Sunday night as the third stop on The Aviary World Tour. Hundreds of people (mostly frat boys… but I mean what did you expect) were lined up outside of HOB ready to party. Kelly, a woman behind me in line expressed her excitement by telling me that she had been waiting to see the duo since 2014!
As the crowd filtered into the venue, New York City based DJ, Cid, began his set. Songs like “Sweet Memories” and “Us” had the crowd moving and grooving for sure. Cid even did a live remix of “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B, which received the best reaction of the night from the crowd. However, the audience energy did subside after a while, for a guy wearing a banana suit in the pit commanded more attention from the crowd than Cid did towards the end of his set.
By 9:30 the crowd was beyond hyped to see Galantis. The house lights dimmed as sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling filled the venue. Hues of purple and pink began to light up the mixing table as Christian and Linus ran out onto the stage. The guys pumped up the crowd by pounding on stand up drums as vibrant graphics coated the screens surrounding the stage and cloudy smoke oozed out of machines. The intro to the fan favorite banger, “Runaway (U & I)” started playing, but then Galantis quickly switched it up as they transitioned to new songs off of The Aviary. I had never witnessed a happier crowd. Sheer joy and energy flooded the 2,500 person capacity venue. The crowd was jumping non-stop, I honestly felt like I was in a nightclub.
“No Money” and “Louder, Harder, Better” were my favorite songs of the night, solely based off of how enthused the crowd was. The guys also did a fabulous job of interacting with the crowd, seeing how it’s easy to become disconnected with a giant sound booth in front of them. Live music was incorporated as well; both, Linus and Christian played live drums over the tracks. They remixed sampled songs like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston and “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs which expanded the party into more of a sing along. The night ended on the best note possible, with the entirety of “Runaway (U & I)” as the encore, the track that first put them on the charts. As the guys parted with the crowd they waved their Seafox flags and thanked the city for a wild night. They truly put on a show that is well worth experiencing, even if you aren’t the biggest EDM fan.
Catch Galantis on the rest of The Aviary Tour!!
