Queer Singer-Songwriter, Hayley Kiyoko has been selling out shows across the country on her first ever tour, “The One Bad Night Tour” and on March 24th, she brought the show to Vienna, VA with support from the Oregon based Indie Rock band Flor.
The show opened with Flor, whose spunky beats and beautiful vocals by lead singer Zach Grace hyped up the crowd in preparation for Hayley Kiyoko to take the stage. Looking around at the crowd, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of young queer girls in the crowd with faces full of anticipation waiting for Kiyoko.
Once Kiyoko took the stage, all attention was brought onto her and the entire crowd knew all of the words to her songs. Pride flags were tossed onto the stage as well as notes and letters addressed to Kiyoko. A certain fan in the crowd had Kiyoko read a note tossed onto the stage the next thing that everyone knew, we were helping a girl come out of the closet by shouting “Ray is gay!” over and over. The atmosphere at this show was incredible as it’s very rare to find a place tailored for queer girls to feel safe. Kiyoko played songs such as “Gravel To Tempo” and queer girl anthem “Girls Like Girls”.
