German pop star Kim Petras joined Troye Sivan on his Bloom tour for his sophomore album. Petras broke into the pop scene in 2017 with the release of her debut single “I Don’t Want It at All”. From the beginning, Petras was projected to be a force in the pop charts. She jumped the Spotify charts and ended up being featured on Charli XCX’s Pop 2. Her openness regarding her transgender identity inspired LGBTQ+ fans, and Petras thanks them for their support and helping her jump start her career. Petras’ sticky beats and memorable choruses made her the ideal artist for Troye to bring on tour.
As soon as Petras stepped on stage, it was very evident that she has the “pop queen” style down pat. Her black blazer and mini tennis skirt paired with a glitter belt and green clout goggles fit her youthful and funky vibe seamlessly. “All the Time” was her opening song, and as I turned around and glanced at the crowd, people were on their feet immediately, even parents who accompanied their kids to the show. It’s so rare for an opener to command the stage and involve the crowd as soon as they hit the stage.
The night continued with some tracks from Petras’ Halloween-themed mixtape Turn Off the Light. The tape was released on October 1, but Petras’ fans knew all of the words already and danced along with her. Her appeal to teenagers correlates to the subject of her songs. Before performing the track “Hillside Boys” Petras stopped to mention: “I wrote this song about rich boys breaking my heart.” “Heart to Break” is another infectious pop track that has similar themes of heartbreak and mistakes.
I was impressed with Petras’ stage presence and saw the potential for her to play venues as large as the Wang Theatre as a headliner. Her set ended with “Can’t Do Better”, which received the most engagement from the crowd.
After the show, I ran into Emerson College junior Lily Marella, who has been a fan of Petras from the beginning. “Kim Petras voice changed my life the first time I heard one of her songs. I didn’t think I would be more impressed with her but after this show I was so shocked with how amazing her energy and love for the crowd was,” Marella said.
