On February 16th, queer punk band PWR BTTM brought their America’s Sweethearts tour to Baltimore, MD with support from Alain Ginsberg, Naked Giants, and Mal Blum and The Blums.
The show began with Baltimore native Alain Ginsberg reading off poems that touched the audiences’ collective hearts and showed the true struggles of what it is like being transgender in today’s society. The crowd was blown away and brought to tears as Ginsberg poured their heart into the words they spoke.
After Ginsberg, Naked Giants took the stage and truly pumped up the crowd with their energetic, garage-punk sound. Rarely do you see the entire audience go completely wild over an opening act but Naked Giants had every person jumping and moving. Mal Blum and The Blums had the crowd laughing and bouncing along to the beat of their songs as they spoke of manic-depressive tendencies and love, both of which it seemed most of the crowd could relate to.
Once PWR BTTM came on, everyone in the room was captivated and entranced by the duo, comprised of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce. PWR BTTM performed songs old and new, including their new single “Big Beautiful Day” and fan favorite “I Wanna Boi”. The warm and inviting face of Hopkins, covered in lipstick and glitter, made the crowd feel at home. In between songs, Bruce and Hopkins told stories of past experiences and gave the overall message that you should love yourself no matter anyone else thinks.
As a frequent concert goer there is one thing I must say about PWR BTTM shows, there is an unrivaled sense of positivity, love and community from the crowds and artists at these shows. If you have the opportunity to attend a PWR BTTM show, don’t miss it because it will surely be a night you won’t forget.
