We never knew how much we needed “Love Your Sin”. Not the I The Mighty faithful, per se, but the legions of would-be fans who needed a single to champion. With a bona fide sing-along locked and loaded, I The Mighty is armed with the missing piece needed to incite Warped riots.
Don’t get me wrong – I adore Karma Never Sleeps and Satori. Both the EP and full-length ranked high on their respective year’s best-of lists, with several tracks earning slots amongst my all-time favorites. The band’s balance between technically-proficient musicianship and Tumblr-ready melodies has always resonated with all intended parties, giving I The Mighty a fantastic catch-all sound enjoyed by most. Given the chance to tinker, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Then “Love Your Sin” filled a void we had never even noticed. Within one listen, the single became the most memorable I The Mighty chorus to date, speaking to both the song’s strength and the band’s need for a standout chorus. We’ve known that vocalist Brent Walsh could deliver poignant lyrics, but “Love Your Sin” accentuates those cutting words with the strong, accessible hook they deserve. Powerful backing vocals from bassist Chris Hinkley ice the cake with a pair of Frozen-esque lines, capping a killer chorus and demanding repeat listens.
The track is clearly constructed to showcase that chorus, which the verses accomplish exceptionally well. Frantic riffing from Walsh and guitarist Ian Pedigo quickly wake listeners, then decelerate to a comfortable pre-chorus launch pad starring nifty drum work from Blake Dahlinger. An extended second verse balks the first build for maximum choral explosion, a surefire pit-starter for summer crowds looking to throw bodies and sing-along. By the bridge, we’re well trained and ready to belt out our best alongside I The Mighty.
Maybe most importantly, the track has incredible replay value. Whether you’re deciphering Walsh’s verse vocals, fronting a solo lip sync or tweeting rampantly, “Love Your Sin” doesn’t lose its luster. It’s a concise track that gets in, gets out, and demands another spin. And another. And another.
At this point, anyone sleeping on I The Mighty just isn’t listening. “Love Your Sin” checks the last box, adding one final weapon to the band’s already impressive arsenal. Learn the words and head-bop your way to their run on Vans Warped Tour.
