Houston, Texas metalcore outfit Royale are attempting to break through an incredibly crowded scene. Sadly, their newest release “This is My Life” will not do them any favors. Despite the promise of the song’s single guitar and clean vocal intro, the rest of the song fails to live up to the expectations it sets.
Vocally, screamer David Boen, at times, teeters on the edge of abysmal. His vocals come off very uninspired, which is disappointing given the arrangement behind him. Bassist/clean vocalist never sounds quite as good as he did in the song’s intro, despite the massive amount of production placed on him. While the lyrical content does save some of the emotion of the song, neither vocalist seem to have mastered the art of translating that emotion into their performance.
Lead guitarist Brandon Melendez is the true star of the track as he showcases his nimble fingers throughout the single. He embodies my personal favorite quality of making sure to not overplay and kill the mood. Unfortunately, all the musical skill he possesses cannot prevent the vocals from dragging down the vibe of the overall song.
Royale are yet another case of a metalcore band with very talented members, but are handicapped by subpar vocalists. While they have their core fanbase that appears, at least on the surface, to be very strong, they cannot break through in today’s over saturated market without a major improvement in that department. One can only hope they put in the necessary work to effect change before they trap themselves regionally, touring with mediocrity.
