If there are two things I like: they are adorable indie bands and equally adorable songs created by indie bands – although I like a lot of things so maybe this entire introduction is redundant. Either way, I have an enormous soft spot for Shout Hey! This is probably due to the fact that they treat their fans like a small family, or they’re one of those South African bands that manage to tug at my heartstrings due to their outgoing and fun-loving nature.
Shout Hey! Gained my attention during a time when I was looking to fill the void that the demise of the legendary Dance, You’re On Fire left in my heart when they broke up. They deliver a similar blend of irresistible and upbeat indie pop which puts an enormous smile on your face when you listen to it. Emerging from the success of “She’s So Crazy” and their recent inclusion onto the line-up of Oppikoppi – one of South Africa’s biggest festivals, they deliver a brand new single entitled “Word of Mouth”.
The single greets you with a twangy guitar riff and off-kilter drumming before launching into the delicate vocal harmonies of Tim Kohler and Matt Pratt, with Kohler taking duties on the light, poppy choruses and Pratt delivering smooth, fine-tuned indie pop styled verses reminiscent of Two Door Cinema Club. The entire song is very reminiscent of Two Door Cinema Club’s Tourist History – which was released around the time of Shout Hey!’s inception. The track comes at you with upbeat guitar riffs and a thick layer of synth that is the aural equivalent of happiness. You are unable to be sad while listening to “Word of Mouth”.
In a world where pop music is unintelligent and often of an over-produced nature, these South African boys deliver some of the most ridiculously brilliant yet simple pop music that you could possibly encounter this year. They continue to join the ranks of bands that are of a calibre that rivals international standards – if only they had the correct exposure. So do Shout Hey! a solid, give “Word of Mouth” a listen, share it with your mates and then give them a follow on Twitter. You won’t regret it.
