Australia has a knack for producing some pretty solid rock bands. AC/DC can be seen as a good – I mean AWESOME – example, although lately the country has become better known for producing some of the finest metal bands around. Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen, Make Them Suffer, Dream On, Dreamer and many more.
Sadly, Air Force Kid doesn’t fall into either of these categories. They are neither an amazing rock band nor a brilliant metal act. They’re a pretty decent, albeit average, hard rock band. Their debut single “Figure You Out” showcases them as being an Australian version of 3 Doors Down. They sound like nearly every other wannabe hard rock band around but they have one thing going for them: they actually sound good. Sure, they sound bland but there is just something about them that makes you keep listening. I have racked up about 10 or 15 plays of the song and I don’t hate it. It actually grows on you if you give it time. The drum beat gets your feet tapping and the guitar riffs chug slowly in the background, only to be punctuated by a pretty decent solo at times. The vocalist throws in a bit of screamed vocals from time to time.
Overall, “Figure You Out” is a good song but it’s just lost on me because I have heard so many songs that sound exactly like it. Although, with time and effort, Air Force Kid could become a phenomenal band. Fingers crossed.
