Who knew that a little pop-punk band from Baltimore, MD would be releasing their sixth (OMG) studio album after over a decade of making us fall in love with them and their music? All Time Low‘s first-released single off of their upcoming album Future Hearts, titled “Something’s Gotta Give”, opened up the door to an overabundance of excitement that fangirls were more than happy to dwell on, which included the release of the track’s accompanying music video and the announcement of frontman Alex Gaskarth and guitarist Jack Barakat as the hosts of the upcoming Alternative Press Music Awards.
The lyrics to “Something’s Gotta Give” very much embody the fun ATL wordplay that we’ve all grown to love over the past decade. They’re simple and singsongy enough to belt out when it’s playing with a thought-provoking theme about that realization of one constantly going through the same song and dance in life, which is extremely apparent in its chorus. It toys around with the idea of actually doing something about your typical life decisions instead sitting around saying “I don’t even know myself/I wish I could be someone else.” Even when you run into times where you think you’re a “fucking waste/filling up the empty space,” ultimately you will open your eyes to change and have the confidence to say “wake me up/say enough is enough/I’m dying to live.”
When you compare the pace and melodies of All Time Low’s past singles to that of “Something’s Gotta Give” there’s going to be some slight differences. For a first single it’s a bold move for them to release a track relatively less energetic, but longtime fans (as well as myself) can easily view it as an indication of their growth as a band. In fact, they kind of have a similar growth pattern to that of Yellowcard, and if they follow that pattern (without losing any band members of course) I have a feeling they’ll not only be able to relate to their slightly older audience but also give new fans a chance to also appreciate their new sound.
Will All Time Low take some drastic musical leaps in Future Hearts? Probably not. But “Something’s Gotta Give” is definitely a step in a different direction and was hinted at in 2011’s Don’t Panic. I am definitely still excited for the album and it’ll be interesting to see what the rest of it will sound like based off of this first single. Who knows, maybe “Something’s Gotta Give” is the only track different from the rest of the album.
