Okay, let’s start with a bit of background.
aka this guy
Beau Ryan is a former Australian rugby league player. He’s been a regular on the inventively-titled The Footy Show for years, taking the piss out of other players and coming on stage one night completely butt naked. He’s basically just there because he’s a funny bastard that managed to retain his good looks despite playing a sport where things like this happen, but hey, someone has to draw the female viewers.
I still can’t believe the network let this go to air.
Anyway, he’s released a single called “Where You From?”. Due to the fact that all he’s built a career out of making fun of his friends and generally dicking around, I assumed that this was a piss take as well. I was wrong, and this single (hilariously) debuted at 19 on the ARIA Singles Charts.
For context, U2‘s ‘New Years Day’ peaked at 54.
So yeah. Let’s get down to business. Whether you like this song will depend entirely on you knowing what the various suburbs of Sydney are like. You’ll also need to be familiar with the ethnic stereotypes that go hand in hand with the level of cultural diversity you find out this way. This is because the lyrics revolve entirely around Kiwis, Lebanese, Greeks, and Aussies and how they act in social settings revolving around rugby league.
Pictured: incisive cultural analysis.
I find it friggin hilarious, because I’m a twelve year old idiot in a twenty four year old’s body who went to high school in Bankstown. While some people (i.e. The Greens Party) would say this is an offensive song with racist lyrics and a degrading video that portrays ethnicities like caricatures, those people have never been to Lakemba when there’s a Bulldogs game on. Hell, they’ve probably never been to Lakemba at all. It’s the only place in the world where there are more track pants and bum bags (or “fanny packs”) than people.
As for Beau, well, he’s not exactly a musician, but hell, he’s clearly having the time of his life. There is not a single frame where he isn’t wearing that cheeky eighth-grader-caught-looking-at-a-dirty-magazine grin, and the actors are all having a ball too. Enlisting the help of Justice Crew was a master stroke, though. Those guys are incredibly talented dancers, singers and I don’t believe for a second that they didn’t have a hand in structuring his vocals and assisting with lyrics.
“Where You From?” is not a game changer. Its not even slightly outside of the box. In fact, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a more generic song (from a compositional perspective, anyway) on the radio today. But that doesn’t matter. Ultimately, this is just a fun song with a fun video with no malicious intent. It’s literally just a dude making fun of his mates, and I’ll defend to the death a man’s right to mock his friends.
