After the cuts on last year’s ROYALTY mixtape, Childish Gambino‘s direction would seem a little split considering the sounds he’s rapping over and the lyricism he’s spitting out over said tracks. His newest song “Think of Me” is an addition to the legendary Funkmaster Flex‘s mixtape Who You Mad At? Me or Yourself?, a song that feels like a much-melded thought of his earlier produced work with a hint of the personality that gave ROYALTY a bite to match the bark.
The flipping between ethereal melodies mixed with a punching drum beat and spouts of super stripped kick-bits makes the sonic landscape quite inducing over the song’s span of personal, upper-echelon leaning characterizations of his life in the mix of Community, dating girls and dealing with fame. Though it certainly isn’t a new look for Gambino to talk about his day to day life, his sense of bitterness is something that didn’t really get shown as sharply on ROYALTY as it hinted at in Camp. In a way, it keeps the revolving door moving with a gust of fresh air that isn’t really about zinger lines but about keeping us interested in what Donald Glover still has to say about his life.
While I’m always down for some new Gambino, hit or miss, “Think of Me” is sharp enough to be catchy, engaging and bubbling with enough personality to keep you interested through its run of personally-inclined lines and just right beats. Hopefully it doesn’t get lost in the midst of this 52-track mixtape, but at least we can know Childish Gambino’s contribution is quite a strong one.
