Electric Century is ex-My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way’s new project. Joining him is Dave Debiak of Sleep Station and New London Fire.
The duo’s debut single “I Lied” takes the typical synthpop sound and applies a dark sincerity to it. They sound a lot like fun. except a lot less fun and a lot darker. Lyrically, the song is brilliant and depressing at the same time. It reveals an emotional intensity which is lacking from most synthpop bands these days. The lyrics touch on themes of addiction and depression, apparently hinting at some parts of Way and Debiak’s past. On an audio level, Electric Century plays the same game as Twenty One Pilots. They create a shimmering and happy exterior sound which coats the dark and twisted lyrical content of the song.
Mikey Way may have stumbled out of the breakup of the biggest pop-punk band around but he has managed to land on his feet. Yes. He is WAY out of his genre (how punny of me) yet it seems to be working for him. It is a major change for him but it seems to be one he is happy with. Electric Century’s debut album later this year shall be hotly anticipated by me.
