With Miss May I’s most recent album, Rise Of The Lion, there was a personal and punchy feel to the more fan-based record. The album continued the more mature shift in the band’s sound first noted with 2012’s At Heart. All of that being said, some fans want to see if the band, within their mature state, still have it in them to get a little gritty.
“I.H.E.”, the first single off of MMI’s upcoming album Deathless, is a jaunt flashback to the harshness that embodied 2010’s Monument. The track starts with slow, brooding guitar chords before erupting into a furious assault of blast beats from drummer Jerod Boyd. Vocalist Levi Benton’s unclear vocals sound like they have a bit of roughness to them, enhancing the angry feel of the track.
One of the highlights of “I.H.E.” is the chorus and singing of bassist Ryan Neff. I hear a bit of a comparison to former Three Days Grace singer Adam Grener. His vocals sound confident as they bridge the gap between melodic and metalcore. All together, this is a well put together sound that will further the love affair between the band and their fans. It’s released at the right time as well. Miss May I will be embarking on Warped Tour and a song like this will not only entice fans to sing along, but to start a circle pit or two.
