Surprise! Semi Precious Weapons has released the first single off of their upcoming(!) new album to be released later this year. With their recent release Aviation only being on the shelves for a few short months, a second album being released in the same year would be an outstanding achievement for the fashionable alt-rockers. Their newest single “Brando” seems to be hinting towards a slightly different musical direction than Aviation. Should we expect to see a new side of the band in the album?
“Brando” has a prominent swankiness (think classy suits, cocktail dresses and wine) purely based on its musicality. It’s got a similar atmospheric and uplifting yet sultry feel to that of “Aviation High”, but it’s a tad less theatrical and focuses more on creating a glamorous-yet-grungy retro-feeling single. This particular track uses its stripped down, raw and subdued feel to command attention instead of with obvious club-worthy beats (not that we don’t love that too). They not only stick to their glam rock roots, but they also play around with some soulful R&B elements and what seems like a hint of electric indie pop. With the way lead singer Justin Tranter’s voice mimics that of the electric guitar, there is a haunting vulnerability and openness that adds to each line of being sung (especially in “my friend, I’ll dance with you again”).
The lyrics of “Brando” are plain and simple. There’s going to be a time in your life when you fall completely and utterly in love with someone that no one else will understand. The vocals pop away from the background music to create a story of a pure and exciting whirlwind romance. Subject matter wise, it’s been done and redone by many artists of different genres. However, Semi Precious Weapons has spun “Brando” into not just any other song about being in madly in love (thank goodness).
“Brando” definitely has a more indie vibe to it than the tracks of Aviation, but wouldn’t it be cool if this song was the beginning of a new chapter in their musical career? This song can open up so many ideas for what the new album could be, or it could be the “Aviation High” of the record and the whole thing could be a part 2 of its predecessor. Either way, “Brando” is a relaxing and romantic song that should be played at trendy dinner parties everywhere.
