It’s been three years since the sappy but inspiring bombshell of a record The Glass Passenger came out, and we Andrew McMahon fans have been dying to hear the next beautifully constructed soliloquy to come out of his mind. The time has finally arrived.
New song “Hostage,” in true Jack’s Mannequin form, is upbeat right from the start. For reference, use “Miss California” from TGP. What I love about any song of theirs is the organic transitions between parts, each verse to chorus to verse section flows brilliantly; almost as if it was completely improved. This track is full of those head-bobbing, strumming riffs combined with McMahon’s piano leads directly on top of them. It is no secret that he has an incredible passion for life, and that just pours out of his music with the most uplifting vibrato. Lyrically, the usually flowery and delicate lyrics from the past are gone but fear not; they have been replaced by stark but poetic statements about love. He is tackling the ever-present topic of love in a new light, but judging by this song the transition was smooth (“Please don’t lose the keys/I won’t hold you hostage”).
This song is what we know and love from McMahon and crew, and I’m incredibly excited for the depth that’s to be explored from these new songs. I am nothing short of impressed. What do you guys think? Listen to the new song “Hostage” below and let us know! And make sure to grab the new record entitled People and Things on October 4th!
