It’s been waaaaaaaay too long since The All-American Rejects have blessed us with new music and they’ve apologized for that with not one, but TWO new songs! What could be better than that? A new music video of course! But with frontman Tyson Ritter’s budding acting career in the works, it came to no surprise that the music video for “Sweat” (which included “Close Your Eyes”) had a more theatrical indie film vibe to it. And to be completely honest, Ritter looks pretty hot as a lady and puts us girls who can’t survive more than 5 minutes standing around in heels to shame. Okay, enough gushing. Time to get to the songs.
Both “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes” have very late-AAR vibes to the instrumentation, vocals and overall musicality. “Sweat” can easily be a blend of When The World Comes Down while “Close Your Eyes” is very clearly Kids In The Street. “Sweat” is the dirty, sexy rock track that perfectly complements Ritter’s raw vocals that we’ve been waiting for. Its quirky tune and simple yet anthemic chorus gives “Sweat” an overall theatrical feel, which easily transcended into its gritty music video portrayal.”Close Your Eyes” comes in on the opposite spectrum with its constant air of loneliness that floats about its lyrics, only intensified with its darker tone to its vocals and music. In a way, it’s almost like the calmer, more scathing version of “Gives You Hell” as it still references being scorned and a “I’ll make you regret it” mindset.
While they easily could’ve gone in a very different direction for their comeback tracks, they chose to stay instrumentally familiar with “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes.” They’re not Move Along kind of tracks, but still recognizably AAR. Thematically and vocally both tracks show versatility and maturity – an inevitable growth that’s been coming for awhile. Both are equal in musicality, but are difficult to compare to each other. In a way, it would almost depend on the kind of mood you’re in to determine which song is the better song. Are you in the mood for a funky yet sultry track to bring into the bedroom? Or are you looking for an emotional ballad that speaks to your broken heart as you go through your stages of grief? The choice is yours, but one thing is for sure – The All-American Rejects are ready to rock their long-awaited comeback and we will be welcoming them back with open arms.
