It’s been a great year in music so far, and we’ve just about hit the middle mark. This week, I’ve decided to dedicate 3 Of The Week to a collection of my favorite songs of the year so far (in no particular order). It’s been difficult to narrow three songs down to include, but ultimately, these three tracks will end up proving themselves to be my most-listened-to songs of the year.
1. Fun. – “Stars”
As someone who’s neither a fan of most radio pop or excessive vocal effects, this song has found its way to the near top of my playlist. “Stars” is a prime example of why Fun. is the future of this crumbling genre of music. Its exploration into Nate Ruess’s internal struggle with life, music, and missing his mother gives us, as listeners, a personal stake in the song. When the song erupts at the quarter-way point into a grand display of pop music – equipped with Kanye West-ish beats and heavy vocal effects – Fun. sheds everything from their Aim & Ignite days, crafting one of their most unique songs.
2. Senses Fail – “War Paint”
Scene veterans Senses Fail have been releasing consistently good music for years, but it’s on their Best Of compilation – which features four new songs – that they release some of their best tracks yet. “War Paint” is a heavy hitter, and features some of their best guitar work yet, and Buddy Nielsen’s most personal lyrics. Ever since the band released the song on Youtube last month, I’ve been listening nearly non-stop. This is nothing new for me when it comes to Senses Fail, but it’s good to know that a band that’s been around for ten years can still make genuinely good music.
3. Every Time I Die – “Partying Is Such Sweet Sorrow”
Before Ex Lives was released earlier this year, I had only been a casual listener of Buffalo, New York natives Every Time I Die. Their style of metal never completely grabbed hold of my attention, but Lives is them at their most personal, which immediately drew me in. “Partying Is Such Sweet Sorrow” is easily my favorite track from the album (of their entire discography for that matter) because of its dark lyrical content. The song seems to represent vocalist Keith Buckley’s foray into heavy drinking, an apparent hard time in his life. The track is both heartbreaking and sarcastically sadistic; it’s easily one of my favorite songs in recent memory.
