Because of the recent events in my life, I’ve been listening to low-key indie artists and rap more often than the heavier end of my music library. Here I’ve got a beautiful female voice, a famous French alternative rock band, and a rap artist with a powerful way with words. Each of these tracks will have you smiling and relaxing. Like a good dose of sunshine, these songs will brighten up your perspective on things.
1. “Birds & Boats” – Gregory & The Hawk
I discovered this beautiful little song by creeping on one of my favorite YouTube users, HeyKelsey. She covered this song, and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately went to their Myspace and listened to the original version. “Birds & Boats” is that adorable song you hum along to yourself when you’re thinking of that special someone. Excuse me for being extra girly, but I think having at least a couple cutesy songs in-between several hardcore and death metal albums is completely acceptable! Since my discovery I have been listening to a lot of Gregory & The Hawk’s music and have found it quite relaxing and ever so beautiful. They are easy listening and very thoughtful!
2. “Lasso” – Phoenix
I have always adored Phoenix since my friend introduced me a while ago. I recently rediscovered their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix on my iTunes library, and “Lasso” has been racking up the play counts. I love how catchy the chorus is, and the music is so upbeat. It also has some of my favorite lyrics to sing: (Forever is a long long time/When you lost your way/Trying to follow your ideals/But your so-called life/It is such a waste). I think these men are incredibly talented, and I adore every single song they have ever produced. Thomas Mars’ voice could make absolutely anything sound brilliant. Even more intriguing is that Phoenix are from Versailles, France. That’s right; they are French indie/alternative rock. Eat your heart out, girls.
3. “My Life’s The Shit” – Harvard Blue (Ft. Prolifik)
“We may not have a lot/but I love what we got/and there’s a lot more to get” – Truly, hip hop music has my heart in a vice grip. I am so passionate about it. Thanks to iLike, I discovered Harvard Blue by browsing my 50 free downloads. The beat is excellently produced, Harvard Blue’s flow is tight, his lyrics are relatable and catchy, and the overall tone of the song is uplifting. Some songs you can just lean back and nod your head to in agreement to the beat and the words, and this is one of those songs. “My Life’s the Shit” is a great song to bump at full volume when you’re driving around on a nice day. Not only will it boost your bass, but your confidence too.
