3 Of The Week: (3/26/13)

By Landon Defever · On March 26, 2013

For this week’s edition of 3 Of The Week, I thought I’d explore how music can affect the way we look at certain seasons. That being said, the season of spring holds a very special place in my heart. After spending month after month having to trudge through Michigan’s erratic weather, it’s good to finally see the grass again. And what better way to celebrate than by re-listening to some of my favorite songs associated with springtime?

1. “Arrows” – Fireworks

After discovering Detroit, Michigan pop-punk quintet Fireworks just last year before Warped Tour, I knew that their latest release Gospel would be a perfect springtime album. Opener “Arrows” best represents this statement, thanks to an upbeat chorus and its no-holds barred lyricism. Vocalist David Mackinder sings, “This is not my swan song or adieu so beware / when they fly white flag in the air / I’ll shoot it down I’ll shoot it down / with arrows”. It’s strong words such as these that make me want to welcome spring with open arms.

2. “That Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed)” – Panic At The Disco

Panic at the Disco’s fanbase split hairs back in 2008 when the band released their follow-up to their 2006 smash hit A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Many applauded the band for their attempts at channeling The Beatles on Pretty Odd, while many abandoned all hope for the act altogether. However, no matter which side you’re on, there’s no doubt that Pretty. Odd. is the definition of a perfect album for springtime. “That Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed)” is a prime example of this, as it properly shows a sign of rebirth for the band…and the transition from winter to spring as well.

3. “An Ode To Maybe” – Third Eye Blind

Third Eye Blind has been producing summer-certified hits for the better part of two decades. Though singles “Semi-Charmed Life”, “Never Let You Go” and “Blinded” are extremely tempting to choose, I’m going to have to with my gut when it comes to 3EB. “An Ode to Maybe” spares no time in getting into its excellent structure. The song showcases one of the best choruses the band has ever made, striking a perfect balance between an bubbly falsetto and vocalist Jenkins’ smooth, sly lyricism. All of these add up to one of my favorite spring-into-summer jams of all-time.

I am currently a student at Saginaw Valley State University, pursuing a major in Marketing with a double minor in Professional & Technical Writing and Communications. While my potential future with this career path has still yet to be determined, my dream goal is design my own music festival, particularly in the vein of Vans Warped Tour. As far as my musical preferences go, I love a little bit of everything. I’m willing to give anything a chance, no matter how big or small, and I’m always open to discussion about my opinions on bands I’ve already heard of. However, bands with passionate lyrics and a driven work ethic are the ones I tend to gravitate towards, specifically the ones listed in my bio section. Overall I’m just a very optimistic, personable dude who’s always happy to meet new people. Let’s be friends, broseph!
