Here at MEB, we are reading our selections for “MEB Ranks 2008.” While my selection was easy to make, there were just too many albums that I love released that year. That is why for this 3peat of the quarter-month I have selected 3 of my favorite songs from 2008. Even when making this list it went to show that I could have done a whole month’s worth of these article just for this fantastic year for electronic music.
1. “Low Life” (L.A. Riots Remix) – Steve Aoki (Ft. Uffie & Scanners)

It wasn’t until making this list that I realized just how great a year 2008 was for mashup music. It had both Girl Talk‘s Feed the Animals and Steve Aoki‘s Pillowface And His Airplane Chronicles. In terms of a whole album, Girl Talk‘s release was better, but the concluding track on Aoki’s album is too good to be missed. From the catchy chorus to the ‘NC-17’ rated rapping by Uffie, this is one of the most unique songs of the genre.
2. “Untrust Us” – Crystal Castles
You’ve heard me gush about them before in this feature, bu they’re back again. This is the first song off of Crystal Castles‘s debut self-titles album. The song’s lyrics haunt you while the beat makes you want to dance, it’s a different kind of song in this genre. This is never more evident than when you get to the end, which is abrupt and has even less to do with the proceeding track. This song got me into this band, which remains a staple of my electronica library.
3. Waters Of Nazareth (Live Version) – Justice
This is it folks, my favorite song from the year 2008. Yes, the studio version from † is also great – but to me, what Justice did with their live album was unlike anything I’ve heard before; taking all of their tracks and changing them for the better. They took the dirty sound of it’s intro and made it into one of the most intense tracks I’ve ever heard. Justice‘s A(Cross) The Universe remains one of my favorite albums of all time. The year 2008 really was the year that I fell in love with this genre.
