3 Of The Week: (3/7/10)

By Jack Appleby · On March 7, 2010

3OTW 3-7

Our second 3 Of The Week is built with two upcoming songs and one that started a band’s career.  A little prog rock, a little hardcore, and some acoustic goodness for your listening pleasure.  One band who’s played one show, one band who’s halfway through their last tour together.  Ok, I think I’m out of comparisons now.  Let’s get to the music.

1. “My Time” – Minus The Bear

It’d be unfair of me to claim to be a Minus The Bear nut; besides a mild obsession with “Double Vision Quest,” I really never gave the band a chance.  At the insistence of a friend, I decided to check out “My Time,” the first song from their upcoming record Omni.  I’m not sure there’s any way this song could be catchier.  Interestingly enough, guitar is completely absent from the song (no, seriously.  There’s no guitar), as guitarist Dave Knudson plays around with his new Omnichord synthesizer.  Outrageously fun and almost dance-pop, it won me over.

2. “Empty Sighs and Wine” – Isles & Glaciers

We’re two days away from getting the long-awaited Isles & Glaciers EP.  Of the three songs played on the radio over a year ago, “Empty Sighs and Wine” sounded like the surefire winner of the bunch. A beast of a chorus that Jonny and Vic take turns styling on are supported by some synths and guitars, courtesy Brian Southall and Nick Martin.  “Hills Like White Elephants” is currently streaming on the band’s Myspace page, hopefully to be joined by this track Tuesday.

3. “Brightest” – Copeland

It takes balls to launch your music career with an overly-sappy ballad.  The first track on their first release, “Brightest” is a simple yet accurate introduction into what Aaron March is: an emotional guy.  Every lyric the guy’s written hits hard from his great delivery, which varies from coffeehouse-style acoustics to layered vocals with loads of effects.  Though maybe sadder than most may like, Marsh comes of genuine and makes his songs work.  I could not find a stream of my preferred acoustic version of this song, so the link will take you to the original piano version.  Do yourself a favor and find both.  Also, don’t forget to catch the band on their farewell tour, as these guys put on a hell of a live show.
